Making XP boot over USB is a little tricky as well, because it’s much more sensitive to the age of the hardware and the system you are using it with. As far as we know, the 32-bit ISO image of XP is the only compatible version that can be put on a bootable flash drive (success for XP 64-bit was limited).
With your USB drive plugged in, the USB drive should be listed. If it isn’t, your system might not support booting from USB. Assuming that it is supported (as is the case with virtually all modern hardware), promote your USB drive to the primary boot device.
USB drives are recognizes by most BIOS systems as bootable drives. Since USB drives are more durable and portable than CDs or DVDs, and also because netbooks lack any type of CD or DVD drive, they have become popular methods of booting and installing operating systems.
